Yamagata is located further north of Nikko. It is a picturesque region with hot springs, mountains, and cherry orchards, offering one an escape into traditional Japanese culture and breathtaking landscapes. Yamadera, or “Mountain Temple,” is a historic site nestled on a steep mountainside. Officially known as Risshaku-ji, visitors to temple must ascend over 1,000 stone steps, surrounded by ancient statues, moss-covered paths, and verdant forests.
